Routine Bodywork
Common Schedule: 1 time per month, or as needed
Sessions last 1 - 1.5 hours |
Primary Purposes: Decrease Muscular Tension, Discomfort, and Chronic Conditions, Injury Prevention, and Enjoyment
Routine massage is a common type of massage, but don’t let the title fool you. It is still an essential part of your horse’s health routine. Even horse’s that are working at a low to medium or consistent levels of activity can get sore and stiff. They are prone to injury when activity becomes routine or they are just out playing in a field. This type of massage is an excellent compliment to chiropractic visits and new or corrective farrier visits.
Examples include lesson horses, pleasure horses, geriatric horses, and work horses.
|
Performance Bodywork
Common Schedule: 2-3 times per month, or as needed before and after competition schedules.
Sessions last 1 - 1.5 hours |
Primary Purposes: Increase Fitness Level and Flexibility, Optimize Current Performance, Increase Proficiency of Activities, Benefits of Maintenance Massage
Horses that are increasing their level or frequency of activity can also become sore and stiff. Preparing for competition, traveling and experiencing new surroundings, and gaining or regaining a level of fitness and flexibility can be stressful for a horse mentally and physically. Supporting muscle memory during new activities aids in proficiency of movement and ability.
Examples include any horse in a competitive situation, young horses learning a specific activity, or horses new to a practice. Injury prevention during this time is critical. |
Wellness Bodywork
Common Schedule: Schedules can vary from once a week to daily until a program is complete and your horse can move to a maintenance massage program.
If massage is not an option, Reiki can be very comforting and effective during times of injury and illness, andcannot cause any negative side effects. |
Primary Purposes: Stimulates Healing Properties of the Body, Provides Comfort, Aids Recovery Time, Complements Veterinarian Treatment Programs
Wellness massage aids in recovery of certain illnesses, injuries, or debilitated states. Massage can help the agitation level, stress level, and boredom of a stalled horse. It also simply provides a social and comforting experience. The physical activities aided by massage that help the healing process include increasing localized circulation, cellular activity and metabolism, and releasing localized and general metabolic waste.
Wellness massage is not designed to treat injury or illness, and veterinary approval is required for a treatment plan to be implemented if your horse is under a specific program. To see if your horse’s condition will benefit from massage, contact your Veterinarian. I am also happy to talk to them directly to create a plan. |
Pre/Post Event Support
Sessions last 30 minutes |
Primary Purposes: Provides all the benefits of Routine Massage before and after an event. If your horse is recieving massage prior to the event, it also provides the benefits of Performance Massage.
Providing your horse with massage before and after he performs is an excellent way to help prevent injuries. |
Clinic: Injury Prevention for a Healthy Horse
Clinic runs for 1 hour, plus an 1 hour hands-on "walk around" or practive session follows.
Clinics work best if I have a horse on site that is safe to use as a "demonstration" horse.
People then bring in their own horses or I walk around to the stalls. Otherwise, a second or third horse are requested to use as "practice" horses. |
My Hands-On clinic trains owners/riders/handlers on basic and safe massage moves and stretches for horses. It is a great way to connect with your horse, a safety measure for barns, and an educational activity for groups. These valuable therapeutic moves are perfect for you to implement in-between veterinary, farrier, and bodywork sessions. Just as you see human athletes do, stretching and massaging your horse’s muscles will increase performance and help prevent injuries. Prevention is key!
- Learn simple and effective massage moves to help increase warmth and circulation
- Learn the signs of pre-injury conditions to stop them before they happen, or to catch them early
- Learn how to safely stretch your horse’s legs and associated areas for increased flexibility and mobility
- Become better attuned to your horse’s health, general comfort, and overall fitness
- Receive a pamphlet with how-to photos, tips, and safety information included in the clinic

Individual Reiki Healing Session
Common Schedule: Schedules follow the same guidelines as the above sessions.
A full Reiki Session lasts from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Smaller animals, such as cats normally only need 30 minutes.
|
Primary Purposes: Provides Comfort and Relaxation, Aids Recovery Time, Stimulates Healing Properties of the Body, Compliments all Health Programs, Safe for Pregnant Animals
Reiki aids in the horses ability to recover from injury or illness. It also provides comfort and relaxation in a non-threatening and safe manner, so it is the perfect compliment to all health related sessions and times of high stress– veterinary, farrier, chiropractic, confinement situations, travel and performance situations. All living things are made of energy, and energy heals energy. Animals respond in a very positive manner to this type of healing.
Reiki is one of the few healing methods that is safe for animals during pregnancy, especially mares. It is also a great way to help calm your horse before, during, and after an event.
Please see more speifics on the benefits of Reiki. |

Please see more on how group sessions work. |

What to Expect
ALL SESSIONS: I will come to where your animal is and work on-site. I am based in Portland OR, but I do travel, especially for groups, so contact me to see if I can come to your area. If I can’t I might have a colleague who can!
ALL SESSIONS: Please try to give me 4 days notice and I will respond to you within 2 days, 24 hours whenever possible. If I am already going to be in your area within a few days of your request I might suggest that I combine trips.
EQUINE BODYWORK: My initial visit will focus on an assessment of your horse to see what will best fit his needs as well as the bodywork session. This includes a history intake and release form, as well as a form that tells you the benefits of and possible side effects that can occur with massage.
EQUINE BODYWORK: While all bodywork is beneficial, for long-term benefits I recommend a program be determined after my initial intake assessment and session. I offer a Rewards Program for multiple sessions to support your ability to provide a program for your horse.
EQUINE BODYWORK: The first time your horse might be a little nervous and will certainly be curious, but they are very good at telling us what hurts and what feels good. I like the owner to be at the first session to hold the horse- it allows for freer movement than being tied. Basic ground manners are expected and I will use appropriate measures to ensure the safety of your horse as well as my own.
Tips for a Successful Equine Massage Session
Please follow these steps to help ensure your horse has a successful session.
I can work with a horse in most situations, but I have had to stop a session due to the horse being too agitated (during turnout and feed time) to benefit from the session, and at the risk of my own dafety. I do ask the horse permission to provide body work, and although not common, animals have been known to refuse the session. If this happens, I will reschedule the session at no charge.
ALL: Download or ask me to email the paperwork ahead of time. That way you can focus your full attention on the first session.
ALL: For animals that need daily exercise, such as horses and dogs, please try to have that completed before I arrive. It helps them release thier "nervous energy"and settle in better for the session.
ALL: Plan the session in a place that the animal feels comfortable, such as their stall, round pen, or their favorite room in the house.
ALL: Plan the session in a time that does not have a lot of distractions, such as turn-out, feeding time, or "human is coming home" time.
EQUINE: Be there to hold your horse, at least for the first session.
EQUINE: Please have your horse groomed to remove surface dirt and have them as dry as possible.
* Remember that Massage and Reiki are not intended to replace veterinary care and Massage/Reiki Practitioners cannot diagnose or prescribe treatment. Used with regular high quality veterinary care, massage and Reiki are an effective compliment to increasing your animal's health.
